Em maré de versões inglesas das canções de Brel, hoje não resisto a mostrar este vídeo de Shirley Bassey a cantar IF YOU GO AWAY / NE ME QUITTE PAS. Shirley Bassey e a sua voz estridente! Exuberante . A puxar ao elogio fácil de quem gosta de “grandes cantoras/es”. Sempre achei que se a Shirley fosse portuguesa teria enveredado pelo fado de Coimbra.

Esta versão em inglês é também uma versão de Rod Mc Kuen que, uma vez mais, peca pelo facilitismo e banalidade de ideias postas na tradução. De um belo texto cheio de emoção passa-se a um texto desenxabido, mas dentro do bom estilo do “showbiz” americano.

Obs: No princípio do vídeo o senhor McKuen tem a lata de dizer, muito convencido, que “esta famosa canção é minha, porque fui eu que escrevi…”

NE ME QUITTE PAS foi cantado por Frank Sinatra, por Nina Simone, por Julio Iglesias, por Barbra Streisand, por Shirley Bassey, por Maysa... enfim, por muitos dos famosos do mundo do espectáculo. NE ME QUITE PAS é cantado por americanos, finlandeses, alemães, italianos, vietnamitas, argentinos, gregos, etc,etc. NE ME QUITTE PAS é cantado em português, em inglês, em espanhol, em croata, em polaco, em holandês, em russo,etc,etc.
Mas como é natural só o seu autor soube transmitir ao público aquilo que realmente sentia ao cantá-la porque cantar esta canção era, no fundo, um prolongamento do acto penoso e dramático de a escrever. Podemos considerar então que há boas ou más versões de Ne me quitte pas. Só isso. Como o original ... jamais! como diz o outro.
